Frase: the brief generator that grew up
Frase started in 2017 as an AI question-answering bot for customer support and pivoted to SEO content briefs around 2020. That pivot turned out to be one of the best in the SEO tools space β Frase now sits in a sweet spot Surfer never quite reached: cheap enough for solo bloggers, capable enough for agencies, and laser-focused on the briefing-and-research half of the SEO workflow rather than the editing half.
The brief generator is the standout product. Give Frase a target query, it analyzes the top 20 SERP results, extracts headings, common questions (from People Also Ask, Reddit, Quora, and Google's related searches), entities, statistics, and external link patterns. Output is a structured brief you can hand to a writer with confidence. The whole process takes about 90 seconds and produces something that previously took a senior SEO 2-3 hours of manual research.
The editor
Frase has its own Content Editor with a topic score (0-100) similar to Surfer's. It is competent but not as polished β the scoring algorithm is older, the UI is slower, and the in-editor SERP comparison is less granular than Surfer's. Most experienced users either edit in Frase for quick wins or export the brief and edit elsewhere (Google Docs, Surfer, raw markdown).
AI writing
The AI Writer is honestly the weakest part of the suite. It produces serviceable but unremarkable drafts β comparable to GPT-3.5-quality output even though Frase routes to GPT-4 for paying users. If you want AI-drafted content, draft in Claude or Writesonic and pull the structure from a Frase brief. If you want a human writer with a great brief, Frase is exceptional.
Pricing β the real story
The Solo plan at $15/month is genuinely the best value entry point in the entire SEO content tools category. You get 4 article briefs per month, full editor access, and AI writing. For a solo blogger or freelance content writer, this is everything you need. Basic at $45/month bumps to 30 articles. Team at $115/month opens up unlimited articles and 3 seats. The Pro Add-On ($35/month extra) is the AI writer and is genuinely optional β many users skip it.
Integrations
WordPress, Google Docs, Google Search Console (the GSC integration is great β it pulls actual query data into briefs), HubSpot, Zapier. No native Surfer integration but you can copy briefs cleanly.
Versus alternatives
Versus Surfer: Frase wins on price and brief generation; Surfer wins on editor experience and score reliability. Versus NeuronWriter: NeuronWriter is similar price with stronger NLP analysis but worse brief quality. Versus Clearscope: Clearscope is for enterprises with budgets to match; Frase is for everyone else. The real positioning: if you have $15/month for SEO tools, Frase is the answer. If you have $100/month, you might pair Frase (briefs) with Surfer (editing) β that is a common stack at agencies.
