Speechify occupies a different niche than ElevenLabs or Murf. Where those tools generate voice for production (videos, podcasts, audiobooks), Speechify is built for consumption — turning text you want to read into audio you can listen to. The user base is heavy with students, ADHD readers, dyslexic learners, busy professionals catching up on articles during commutes, and accessibility-driven users.
The platform's strength is the reading surface: Chrome extension that reads any web page, mobile app that handles PDFs and EPUBs, OCR for scanned documents, and tight integration with email and document apps. Voice quality has improved meaningfully since the 2024 model upgrade — competent enough for hours of listening — though it does not match ElevenLabs for production-grade output.
Celebrity voices
The licensed celebrity voice clones (Snoop Dogg, Gwyneth Paltrow, MrBeast among others) are the marketing hook and genuinely fun for short-form listening. Quality is high — these are properly licensed voice clones with permission, not unauthorized use. Whether you want Snoop reading your annual report is a personal call.
Speechify Studio (separate product)
Speechify also operates Speechify Studio (formerly Speechify Voice Over), a production-side TTS tool aimed at content creators. This is a distinct product from the consumer reader and competes more directly with Murf — separate pricing, separate workflow. Worth knowing about but treat as a different tool when comparing.
Pricing
Free tier: limited voices, basic web reader. Premium at $11.58/month (annual, equivalent to $139/year) unlocks all voices including celebrity, faster speeds, OCR, advanced controls. There is no monthly option for Premium — annual only. The "free trial" is actually a 3-day window that requires credit card and auto-converts to annual.

Versus alternatives
